Course Details

Onslow is a co-educational state secondary school with a strong tradition of academic education within a student centred philosophy. Students do not wear a uniform. We teach our students to be independent learners.

Onslow offers a full range of subjects from the Languages, Commerce, Science and Arts areas. We provide up to 10 hours of intensive English support at all levels. We also have in class subject support. Students are prepared for the IELTS examination, the NCEA literary requirements, as well as other English Language exams. Most of our international students go on to attend university or other tertiary institutions. The school has good results in public examinations and other cultural and sports activities. Over 85% on average gain entry to University each year.

Location and Facilities

Onslow is located in the suburb of Johnsonville which is 10 minutes by car north of central Wellington. It has a large shopping centre with lots of bush and parks nearby. Onslow has excellent cultural and sports facilities. Our new gymnasium, library, Arts Centre, café and computer facilities are features of the school.

Accommodation and Welfare

The Director of International Students assists students with administration issues and choice of subjects. We also have a Homestay Coordinator to assist with accommodation and a Guidance Counsellor to assist with any personal problems. If required, we also use bilingual counsellors.

The school arranges accommodation with New Zealand families.

International Students

Onslow has always welcomed international students and we currently have students from about 20 countries. Approximately 11 percent of our students come from non-English speaking backgrounds. Some are international students and others live permanently in New Zealand. Twice a year a summary of each international student’s academic progress is translated and sent to their families.
