Greetings
from Geraldine High School. Geraldine is a small rural town
137kms south of Christchurch with a population of
approximately 2500. Close to magnificent outdoor views and
activities such as rafting, kayaking 4X4 adventures, fishing
and golf, Geraldine is also home to many talented artists
and crafts people. There are glass blowers, painters,
stained glass artists, potters, wood turners and jewellers.
We even boast our own hand made chocolate shop!
There are 548 students enrolled in the high school in Years
11 -13 including 15 international students from Japan,
Korea, China, Thailand, Germany and Panama. Students always
report that they find it a very friendly place to study .
Enrolling only small numbers of international students from
a variety of countries ensures that they mix well into the
school and local community. We actively encourage
involvement in all school activities. All our present
students are involved in at least one extra-curricular
activity such as badminton, netball, basketball, soccer,
music lessons or the school’s forthcoming drama production.
Three students were finalists in the recent “Wearable Arts”
competition.
This year there are three students enrolled in our popular
Outdoor Education courses. Jirayu (Year 12) particularly
likes the school challenge ropes course and rock climbing
while Friederike and Chisato (Year 13) are very keen
kayakers and have just completed a 7 day tramp through the
Nelson Lakes District.
Geraldine High School has a proud tradition of high academic
achievement and this was confirmed again recently with the
school being ranked as having the 5th highest NCEA level 1
and 2 results out of the 51 schools in the Christchurch and
Canterbury region.

Inbound
Agents Visits
China
In April a number of KiwiEdLink schools were fortunate to
host Sarah from Beijing Jinjilie who was sponsored by Massey
University and also by Kiwi English Academy. During her time
here, she also visited Mount Albert Grammar School, Rosehill
College and Onslow College. Beijing Jinjilie is a very
strong agent, currently looking to expand their options for
high school study.
Despite the rain, Sarah enjoyed her time in New Zealand. It
was great to catch up with her in Beijing again just 2 weeks
ago on the annual KiwiEdLink visit to China.
Russia
Also in April, Irina Frolova, an active KiwiEdLink partner
in the Russian Far East, expanded her horizons to sunny
Nelson. There she took time to visit our member schools -
Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls, Garin College and
Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT). The
development of the potential market—Russia is an important
strategy for KiwiEdLink as make schools aim for nationality
diversity among their international student roll. |
