Course Details
The college aims to give each student a broad general
education in the first three years of his secondary
schooling as a sound base for specialisation later. The
course structure is constantly under review and balances
breadth of outlook with a strong academic focus.
All students are assessed on arrival at College and placed
in appropriate programmes. A full-time one term intensive
English course is provided for all students who need more
language skills before entering mainstream courses. On-going
ESOL classes and subject support are also provided.
Location and Facilities
Nelson is located at the top of the South Island and is
close to both beaches and mountains. The college is a five
minute drive from the airport and within easy walking
distance of the city. The College is situated in 22 hectares
of park-like grounds with extensive playing fields, courts,
and a wide range of up-to-date facilities including two
gymnasiums, new technology block, computer suites,
well-equipped science laboratories and music rooms, and its
own outdoor education centre at Mataki Lodge. The new
international centre for ESOL and languages opened in 2003.
Accommodation and Welfare
Students are met at the airport on arrival. Throughout the
college and the boarding houses there is a full guidance,
tutor and support network with regular meetings, tutorials
and individual counselling.
The three boarding houses have small
dormitory and cubicle accommodation. Each house is under the
guidance of a Housemaster, Assistant Housemaster, two Tutors
and a matron. Students may choose to live with a carefully
selected family.
